The Department of Metallurgy was formed in 1954 within the Faculty of Applied Science. It became the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science in 1971. The Faculty of Applied Science became the Faculty of Engineering in 1981. The department became the Department of Materials Engineering and Materials Design in 1990. As at 2017, there is a Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering.
