Content DescriptionNews that the 'fat headed' rector of Chis't [Chislehurst] [Francis Dawson] has written to John's sister [Sophia] and asked to meet her; she has said no; wishes his 'uncle of Canterbury' [Charles Manners-Sutton, Archbishop of Canterbury] would give him a second living; repeats the reasons why the prospect of a marriage with Dawson was disliked; (24 Aug) John's niece Frances Sophia was christened today; news of mutual friends; John's letter from Moscow arrived on the 21st after three weeks; is surprised that the communications are so bad; walked the whole length of 'Oxford Road' [Oxford Street] shopping with Sophia, and met Jack Manners; reports that the Duke of Leeds has offered to see his daughter [Charlotte Lane-Fox née Osborne] if she tells him the name of the person who carried on the business between her and [Sackville Lane] Fox; discusses the issue of silk manufacture and the admission of French and Indian silks; asks to be brought 'Russian Stock' seeds for the garden.
