Content DescriptionExamination in French of Joseph de Castillo; states him to be a Captain in the Regiment of the Marquis de Deynse, a Walloon regiment in the service of the King of Spain, obliged to leave the service after killing a French officer; reports his return to Holland with the intention of going to Portugal to serve; states that he obtained a passport, via the Portuguese ambassador, from Stanhope, Minister at the Hague, to travel to England with the intention of going from there to Portugal; cites various letters of recommendation and outlines events leading to his arrival at Harwich and subsequent arrest.

Endorsement in hand of Robert Harley [later 1st Earl of Oxford] reads 'send a copy of this to Mr [Alexander] Stanhope, the man to remain in custody till his answers come'.
