Content DescriptionProvides details of the case of William Butler, a prisoner in Newgate; says that he was fined in May 1699 for saying that King William and the ArchBishop of Canterbury had perjured themselves; states Butler's view that William broke his oath of allegiance to King Charles II and the Archbishop of Canterbury [Thomas Tenison] broke the one which he swore to King James II; says that Butler has been in Newgate [prison] ever since in a 'miserable condition'.
