Erskine May has accepted chief clerkship of House of Commons on Sir Denis Le Marchant's retirement and that Mr Palgrave is to be promoted; wishes to recommend himself to Speaker [Denison] for vacant junior clerkship post; asks for George Grey's support; describes his career in House [of Commons] since 1854; states that he was Private Secretary to Mr FitzRoy and worked for Mr Cowper, Commissioner of Works; was made referee of private bills by Speaker but work is sessional and now wishes permanent position; informs him that his elder brother [John Bonham-Carter] has addressed Speaker on his behalf; comments that he is applying to Sir George Grey due to his friendship with his father.
