Content Description
Refers to discussions regarding replacements for Sir W. Molesworth (deceased) and Canning; refers to the widely believed rumour that Newcastle had been 'named as the certain Colonial Secretary'; says that all believes this until Labouchere was appointed; has heard from Cook that Newcastle has been named to the 'vacant garter'; says that this is not widely reported; says that Newcastle will find himself 'the popular man of the day' when he returns; reports that Palmerston has no thoughts of a 'dissolution' and will be better supported than in the previous session; says that he has seen the doctor and paid him; says that 'Little Argyll' [8th Duke of Argyll] has been 'cut into two parts' and given a new position in the Post Office to share with his old one.
Reports that the King of Sardinia [Victor Emmanuel II, later King of Italy] is in England; says that Newcastle is expected on 3 Dec. 1855; recommends that Newcastle visit the Emperor [Napoléon III] in Paris if he is able.
Dating based on dates of related documents.
This document is addressed to 'My dear' Lincoln'; content suggests that it is intended for the 5th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne.
