Reports that the trustees of the National Portrait Gallery will not buy Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Lord Brougham; says that they insist on the subject being deceased for ten years before purchase and Lord Brougham is still alive; says that the Duke of Newcastle 'loves and understands British portraiture' and has 'bought what the nation would not buy'; states that the portrait will be added to the collection at Clumber [Park].
