Title | Ordnance survey maps relating to properties held by the Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne in the counties of Berkshire, Gloucestershire, Kent, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Surrey, and Wiltshire; c.1861-c.1950 |
Content Description | This sub-series consists of volumes or groups of Ordnance Survey maps, and single ordnance sheets, which are arranged alphabetically by county; contains a mixture of ordnance town scale maps [10 feet to the mile or 1:500] and ordnance county series maps [both 6 inches to the mile or 1:10560, and 25 inches to the mile or 1:2500]; the Nottinghamshire estates feature predominantly.
In most cases the Ordnance Survey maps are marked up or coloured for estate purposes, usually to show the status of Newcastle estate land [i.e. sales or purchases of land, land occupied by tenants, etc.], although in some cases the reasons for the annotations aren't clear.
Other sub-series include hand drawn maps and plans [Ne 6 P 1-7] and terriers and surveys [Ne 6 P 14-17].
