Content Description | This series of manorial papers forms part of the sixth deposit of the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection (GB159 Ne 6 A-X). It ranges in date from 1406 to 1958 and relates predominantly to manors which were held by the Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne and their forebears, though there are also some records from manors which were not held by the dukes.
The series relates to manors/bailiwicks in Nottinghamshire and in Surrey - the latter reflecting the shift in the property interests of the later dukes. Users interested in manorial records are advised also to consult the series of manorial papers contained in the first deposit - Ne M.
This series of manorial papers includes court rolls, accounts, custumals, rentals, precepts and so on, and contains information such as jury lists, presentments, details of fines, issues and amercements, and verdicts. The series also contains enfranchisements and compensation agreements, reflecting the later shift from copyhold to freehold tenure.
The papers have been arranged geographically by county, manor, and then by particular type of record. The beginning of each new grouping is marked by a catalogue entry in bold.
