Content Description | This series of legal papers forms part of the sixth deposit of the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection; it relates primarily to the legal business of the later Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne, but there is material relating to the legal business of some earlier Dukes and their Holles forebears, the Earls of Clare.
The series includes case papers - bills of complaint, interrogatories, summons, instructions and the like - but there is also much supporting documentation such as correspondence, accounts, bills and so on; many of the bundles are centred around disputes relating to the Hope Settled Estates and the Hope heirlooms, but disputes relating to the dukes Nottinghamshire and Surrey property are also present; the early bundles relate primarily to property in Yorkshire, in particular Aldborough and Boroughbridge.
The series ranges in date from 1332-1985, though the bulk of the material dates from between 1880 and 1920.
The papers have been preserved within their original bundles, with the majority of bundles being listed in date order.
