Content Description | Has looked at the papers sent to Mr [George?] Mason relating to the estates of Worksop Priory [Nottinghamshire] which were surrendered to Henry VIII, to discover which of the lands owned by the [2nd] Duke of Newcastle [under Lyne] are free from tithes; acknowledges that his correspondent has taken a lot of trouble to acquire copies of the various records; asks on behalf of the Duke for further explanation regarding his letter dated 28 Oct. [1770] [see Ne 6 D 2/47/191] regarding which of the lands are subject to tithe payments; assumes that the rectory of Worksop was an appropriation vested, but made inappropriate with the dissolution and so became the property of the Bishops of Lincoln, whereby the tithes continued; acknowledges that until more information is received about all the land which belonged to the Priory, then the Duke desires a fuller explanation. |
