Content DescriptionCongratulates him on his twelfth birthday; advises that as our advantages and opportunities of 'doing good to others and ourselves increase, so do our responsibilities increase'; notes that he was apprenticed over 100 miles from his friends at Charles' age; states that at Portsmouth Dockyard, boys his age have to walk 25 miles a day, ropewinding in a room 1097 feet long (his premises in the High Street).

Asks him to ensure that that his 'Mamma' [Priscilla McLaren (née Bright)] rides a horse or drives a carriage as it is necessary for health; refers to the printing of John [Bright's] book.
