Admin History | These papers form part of the larger Manvers Collection, and were generated in the course of the management of the family's estate business. For details about the Pierrepont family and their estates, see the collection-level description for Manvers. In subject matter and date, they complement other groups of papers in the Manvers Collection. There are many areas of overlap between these groups, which are catalogued separately because of the date and manner of their transfer to the University. |
Custodial History | These papers form a sub-fonds of the Manvers Collection (GB 0159 Ma), and comprise material which came to the University library from the solicitors to the Thoresby Trust in 1979. The items in this sub-fonds are miscellaneous, and were probably acquired by the solicitors at various times in the course of their dealings with the trustees of the Thoresby estate. |
Description | The papers are very mixed and do not form a coherent body of material.
Deeds and leases (Ma 8 D) date mostly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The majority come from Earl Manvers' Holme Pierrepont estate in Holme Pierrepont, Adbolton, Gamston, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Cotgrave and Clipston-on-the-Wolds. The collection contains significant bundles of duplicate conveyances of farms and land from the Holme Pierrepont estate sold in 1938-1939 and 1942. Some other deeds are present, recording conveyances at Edwinstowe, Weston, Kersall, and Inkerson Fen in Sutton St Edmund, Lincolnshire. There are also two leases and a conveyance relating to coal mining in north Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.
A small series of estate papers (Ma 8 E) is very miscellaneous, including references to estate business at Beighton, Lambley, Perlesthorpe, Edwinstowe, Laxton and Kneesall.
The final series of family and trust papers (Ma 8 F) contains one mid-18th century item relating to the 2nd Duke of Kingston, but the remainder of the papers date from the first half of the 20th century and deal with family trusts and settlements, and the accession of the 6th Earl Manvers and his petition to raise his sisters to the rank of Earl's daughters. |
