Admin HistoryThese papers form part of the larger Manvers Collection, and were generated in the course of the management of the family's estate business. For details about the Pierrepont family and their estates, see the collection-level description for Manvers. In subject matter and date, they complement other groups of papers in the Manvers Collection. There are many areas of overlap between these groups, which are catalogued separately because of the date and manner of their transfer to the University.
Custodial HistoryThese papers form a sub-fonds of the Manvers Collection (GB 0159 Ma) and came to the University library, from the Trustees of the Manvers Estates, at varying times between April and September 1969.
DescriptionThe papers include a considerable number of maps and plans, the earliest of which is a coloured parchment map of Thoresby-cum-Perlethorpe in 1690. This shows the site and first house at Thoresby, which was destroyed by fire in the 1740s. A leather bound volume of c.1808 contains plans of the second house built by John Carr between 1767 and 1771. There is also a series of large architects' plans and elevations of the third and present house built by Anthony Salvin in the 1860s and 1870s.

Maps of other estates include one of Laxton, made to accompany the survey carried out by Henry de Bruyn in 1812 (for the survey, see the second Manvers catalogue, Ma). There are also tithe maps for Kneesall (1840), Laxton (1839) and Clipstone (1844), and an enclosure plan for Edwinstowe (1819).

The collection also contains 20th century estate papers, relating mainly to Thoresby and Holme Pierrepont in Nottinghamshire, and Crowle in Lincolnshire. They include bundles of estate correspondence sent to R. Wordsworth, the agent at Thoresby, in 1913, referring to all Manvers estates; and papers relating to exemptions from military service for men employed on the Thoresby estate, 1916-18.

Smaller series are also present, such as miscellaneous accounts, including an assessment book of the vestry of Edwinstowe parish church (1841); and particulars and valuations of lands (1867-1949). There is also a letters patent of King James confirming grants of the manors of Hanslope, Buckinghamshire, Hartwell, Northamptonshire, and Charminster, Dorset (1628)
