Admin HistoryThese papers form part of the larger Manvers Collection, and were generated in the course of the management of the family's estate business. For details about the Pierrepont family and their estates, see the collection-level description for Manvers. In subject matter and date, they complement other groups of papers in the Manvers Collection. There are many areas of overlap between these groups, which are catalogued separately because of the date and manner of their transfer to the University.
Custodial HistoryThese papers form a sub-fonds of the Manvers Collection (GB 0159 Ma) and came to the University library in 1965 from the London solicitors of the Pierrepont family, and from the Thoresby Estate Office.
DescriptionThe bulk of this collection was received from the family's London solicitors. Evelyn Robert Pierrepont, 5th Earl Manvers (1889-1940), was unable to take on the burden of the estate due to ill health. The first part of this collection arises out of these circumstances, and consists of general accounts of the Receiver, 1926-1938.

The estate papers received from the London solicitors can be divided roughly in half. The first part deals with the Earl Manvers' Trustees negotiations with various colliery and mineral companies in north Derbyshire and south Yorkshire, for the sale, purchase, exchange or lease of land and minerals. It includes papers relating to the following transactions:

- lease of coal to the Bolsover Colliery Company, under land in Edwinstowe received in exchange from the Duke of Portland in 1912; opposition to new railway line to serve Edwinstowe Colliery; easement for electric power line; and sale of land in Edwinstowe (1922-1926)
- lease of coal and minerals at Calow in 1928, and variation of mineral leases at Calow involving the Clay Cross Company and the Grassmoor Company, 1937-38
- sale of land and minerals at Gedling to the Digby Colliery Company in 1930 [see also title deeds in the first Manvers catalogue, Ma 3001-5876]
- leases of Owlcotes Colliery at Heath to the Hardwick Colliery Company, 1889-1928
- leases and sale of the Melton Field Seam of coal at Adwick upon Dearne to the Manvers Main Colliery Company, 1928-1930, with earlier papers dating back to 1805
- joint mineral lease with the Duke of Portland, to the New Hucknall Colliery Company, 1907-1942
- leases and sales of minerals in Beighton, Eckington and Killamarsh to the Sheffield Coal Company, 1894-1944
- lease of minerals at Belle Eau Park, Kirklington, to the Stanton Ironworks Company, 1938

The second part deals with 20th century estate administration for lands in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and London. There are deeds of sale, purchase and exchange, leases, and papers relating to provision of utilities and repairs, reduction of rents, etc., relating to the following properties or transactions:

- Budby, Ollerton, Edwinstowe and Thoresby, 1928-53
- Compensation agreements for extinction of Manorial Incidents in Edwinstowe and Crowle, 1926-41
- Laxton, Eakring, Kneesall, Weston and Fledborough, 1908-1953, including extinction of Laxton Common Right, 1951-53
- Holme Pierrepont, Radcliffe-on-Trent and Cotgrave, 1921-1950
- Sneinton, Colwick and Nottingham, 1910-1939
- Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Purchase of Underwoods Farm, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire 1952-53. Purchase of Vines Farm, Wiggenhall, Norfolk, 1952. Sale of both, 1956
- Beighton, Hasland and Calow sales, Derbyshire, 1907-1939; and mineral exchange with William Arkwright, 1920.
- Gloucestershire. Purchase of the 'Querns', Cirencester, 1913
- Crowle, Stragglethorpe and Sutton St Edmund, Lincolnshire. Sales and purchases, 1930-1952
- Adwick upon Dearne and Bolton upon Dearne, Yorkshire. Agreements with railway companies, and sales, 1878-1920
- Middlesex, Essex and London. Purchase and sale of ground rents in Elthorne Avenue, Hanworth, 1903-1964; purchase of ground rents at Elphinstone Road, Walthamstow, 1912; and sale of 6 Tilney Street in the parish of St George, Hanover Square [the London residence of the 3rd and 4th Earls Manvers], 1927.

The second part of the catalogue consists of miscellaneous papers received from the Thoresby Estate Office. They include estate papers relating to:
- Thoresby House, c.1780-1952
- Budby cum Perlethorpe, 1822-1945 (principally estate agents' correspondence, 1860s-1870s)
- Ollerton, Edwinstowe and Kneesall, 1745-1932
