Admin HistoryThese papers form part of the larger Manvers Collection, and were generated in the course of the management of the family's estate business. For details about the Pierrepont family and their estates, see the collection-level description for Manvers. In subject matter and date, they complement other groups of papers in the Manvers Collection. There are many areas of overlap between these groups, which are catalogued separately because of the date and manner of their transfer to the University.
Custodial HistoryThese papers form a sub-fonds of the Manvers Collection (GB 0159 Ma). This deposit was received by the University Library in 1958. Some files of estate correspondence, following on from material already in this deposit, were received by the University in 1985 and added to Ma 2 C in February 2015.
DescriptionThe principal series of records in Ma 2 are estate maps (1690-1940), deeds (19th and 20th century) and estate correspondence (1840-1947). There are a number of accounts and rentals, some of which fit into series previously received, and some other smaller groups.

The accounts series includes Thoresby, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Collection accounts, 1860-84 and 1889-91, which complement those listed in the second deposit (Ma A-X) and in Ma 6. Thoresby Estate Disbursements account books, 1860-88, 1891-12 and 1926-50 are also present [see also Ma 6 for a full series dated 1788-1950].

Besides these general account books, the collection contains a number of miscellaneous cash books, ledgers and particular accounts, such as farm accounts, 1878-1913 and 1941-49; timber accounts, 1869-1950; stable and kennel books 1854-1926; game books 1861-1914; and household account books 1907-47. Accounts relating to the building of the third Thoresby Hall, 1864-75, are in the Accounts, Miscellaneous series (Ma 2A/208).

Budby parish accounts, 1779-1824, also complement others listed in Ma. There is also a Register of services and offertories at Budby Mission Church, 1888-1936; and a series of records from Perlethorpe parish, including parish accounts, 1741-1835, churchwardens' accounts 1857-1932, offertory accounts 1887-1939, register of attendance of choir and bell ringers 1918-35, and miscellaneous papers (c.1929-c.1945).

Rufford Hunt accounts, 1902-20, minutes, 1908-30, and incoming and outgoing files, 1910-1933, were presumably preserved at Thoresby because of the 4th Earl Manvers' position as Master of the Hunt.

Rentals also complement those in other deposits. Thoresby Collection rentals are present from 1773 and 1780-1816 [see also Ma A-X and Ma 6]; and Holme Pierrepont Collection rentals from 1774. However, most rentals are allotment rentals (1871-1942), and mineral rentals from the Derbyshire and Yorkshire estates (1886-1942).

There are 65 bundles of miscellaneous estate papers, dated 1745-1948 and arranged chronologically (Ma 2 B). There are also larger series of incoming estate correspondence bundles and files, 1840-1846 and 1906-1947; and outgoing letter books, 1874-1940 (Ma 2 C). The incoming correspondence includes files relating to the army camp stationed at Thoresby during the Second World War.

Bundles of title deeds and associated papers (Ma 2 D) include documents dating back to the 17th century, but relate principally to transactions in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are separate sections for Edwinstowe (1737-1941); Kersall (1617-1874); Kneesall (1738-1939); various places in Nottinghamshire, mostly relating to sales in the early 20th century (1794-1946); Derbyshire, mostly relating to sales (1895-1946); Crowle (1813-1943); papers relating to the sale of the Bath estate (1811-1894); Wiltshire (1723-1913), and papers relating to disposal of the estate (1862-1914); and Adwick (1855-1931). A section entitled 'Various Counties' includes deeds, correspondence, accounts, plans, sale particulars, marriage settlements and wills relating to miscellaneous estates (1769-1941), and estate duty and succession papers of the 3rd Earl Manvers including household inventories for Thoresby Hall and the London houses, dated 1860, 1900, 1926 and 1935. This section also contains leases to various colliery companies, 1890-1938.

Enclosure Acts and Awards are present for Kersall, Walkeringham, Crowle, Luddington and Garthorpe (1778-1862); and there are further household inventories for Thoresby Hall, 1903-1926.

Manorial records include verdicts and suit rolls from the manors of Carlton, Cotgrave, Holme Pierrepont, Radcliffe on Trent, Screveton and Sneinton (1818-1932), fines on admission from the manor of Crowle (1828-1949 - see also Ma), and lists of chief rents and common fines in the manors of St John of Jerusalem in south Nottinghamshire, Orston and Screveton (1880-1932).

One of the largest series of records in this collection are the Maps and Plans, dating from 1682 to 1940, but principally 19th century. They have been arranged by county (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire), and within that by type, divided into individual place maps, Ordnance Survey maps, and maps relating to railways and canals. The series includes tithe maps for Budby, Carburton, Fledborough, Ollerton and Perlethorpe.

There are small series of legal papers (1838-1908), surveys (1850-1938), and tithe awards and papers (1838-1939).

Finally, a series of miscellaneous items including:
- printed Acts of Parliament, reports and broadsheets
- a portfolio of notes relating to expenditure on the building of the second Thoresby Hall by John Carr, 1766-72, and alterations up to 1804; and papers relating to Elizabeth (Chudleigh), Duchess of Kingston, and her trial for bigamy, 1776-87.
- Pierrepont genealogical papers
- Edwinstowe Co-operative Society account book, 1895-1913
- papers concerning the military occupation of Thoresby Hall, 1939-48
- Thoresby Provident Club records (founded 1884). Documents include correspondence, accounts, a minute book, sick registers, and balance sheets, 1884-1912.
