Admin HistoryTimothy P. Hart was an undergraduate at Cambridge but completed a Ph.D. on 'The Town of Nottingham in the 14th Century' at Nottingham University in 1986. He became interested as a student in brass rubbings and assembled a collection which includes specimens from across the Midlands, East Anglia and southern England. He subsequently made his career in local government service.
Custodial HistoryThis collection was given to the University by Dr Hart in 2003.
DescriptionThis collection is based around a manuscript inventory, 'Catalogue of British Monumental Brasses', compiled by Dr Timothy Hart, which gives details and descriptions of 151 brasses including those comprised in this collection of brass rubbings, and some others no longer with the collection, or never rubbed. The brasses are arranged into categories based on the costumes worn by the subject, and the date of the brass. Each rubbing has been numbered according to this inventory. There are also annotated pencil drawings of faces, hairstyles, armour and clothing depicted in the rubbings, and tracings of heads; and three publications listing brasses in churches in various counties. (MS 417/1)

The collection also includes 84 brass rubbings, made in gold coloured wax on black paper (MS 417/2). The brasses are dated from the 13th century to 1641, but are mostly from the 15th and 16th centuries. They come from a wide range of churches and institutions in the following counties:

Derbyshire (10 brass rubbings), Cambridgeshire (9), Gloucestershire (7), Oxfordshire (6), London and Middlesex (6), Hertfordshire (5), Norfolk (4), Suffolk (4), Leicestershire (4), Essex (4), Kent (4), Warwickshire (3), Lincolnshire (2), Somerset (2), Surrey (2), Sussex (2). There are also single examples from the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Wiltshire and Yorkshire.
