Admin HistoryWilliam Bunting, the compiler and donor of this collection, was living in Thorne near the Level of Hatfield Chase, Yorkshire in 1969. He was active in the campaign to prevent the Central Electricity Generating Board from using the area for the disposal of fuel ash from Drax power station. His work included a literature survey about the area as well as natural history studies.
Custodial HistoryThe collection was given to the University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts in 1970.
DescriptionThe collection comprises copies of papers providing evidence about the natural history and amenities on the Level of Hatfield Chase, particularly Thorne Moor, Yorkshire. It was compiled by William Bunting in the context of a campaign to prevent the Central Electricity Generating Board using the area for the disposal of fuel ash. The survey itself includes information about: public water-based amenities; West Riding enclosure awards; notes on the vegetation, spiders and ecological research possibilities of Thorne Moore; survey of birds on the Level of Hatfield Chase; aspects of local history of the area; and a report on the Bryophytes of Thorne Waste.

The collection also includes: a foreword to the survey explaining its content and purpose, 21 May 1969; a list of contents to the survey; an open letter to Peter Shore of the Department of Economic Affairs requesting action to prevent the dumping of fuel ash on the Level of Hatfield Chase, 26 June 1969; and a copy letter from J. Edward Lousley, Vice President of the Botanical Society of the British Isles to the Inspector of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government in Selby, Yorkshire, 14 August 1970.
