Content Description | Acknowledges her letter of 18 May and is pleased she will allow Mary [Cannan] to remain in the Studio [Rocca Forte] till August; reassures her about the contents and condition of the studio; comments on the extreme heat and dried out surroundings; says that 'Bowdwin' [new owner of Rocca Bella] has not yet arrived and they are unable to borrow any more books [from Rocca Bella] as the place is now locked; have nearly read all their 'Revues des Deux Mondes'; describes their recent trip to Malta which he hated both for its unattractive terrain 'glaring gritty dry yellow lump' and its British regime 'beneficent and sterile'.
Reports that he had that day received fresh writing paper and can begin work again; mentions having sent her his play and will shortly send her a 'small History of Europe' ['Movements in European History'] written for the Oxford University Press; tells her 'Cicio' [Francesco Cacopardo] is leaving for America on 11 June; if his new novel is serialised in America he and Frieda may go to the Black Forest for a couple of months; feels the need for a 'breath of the north'; promises to store her possessions carefully after 'Mary' [Cannan] leaves and asks for her new address so he can keep her informed of local news; signed 'D.H. Lawrence'. |
