Content Description | Informs her of a Christmas competition in the 'Nottinghamshire Guardian' which invites the submission of three stories; he has already written two with the encouragement of Alan [Chambers] and Jessie [Chambers]; as he cannot submit more than one story he asks her to submit his attempt at an 'Amusing Adventure' story in her own hand and her own style; offers to let her read his 'Legend' story; thinks that the 'Amusing' story is less likely than the 'Legend' to be accepted. Has not seen Jessie, because of the bad weather, but he will post her note to Jessie. The letter is signed 'D.H.L.'
Details of the Christmas competition were issued in the 'Nottinghamshire Guardian' on 8 Oct 1907. The 'Legend' that Lawrence submitted was later to become 'A Fragment of Stained Glass'. Louie Burrows sent in 'The White Stocking' which was later re-written and published in 'The Prussian Officer and Other Stories' (London: Duckworth, 1914). |
