Content DescriptionOriginal vinyl recording, of Frieda Lawrence reading the following poems by D.H. Lawrence: 'Invocation to the Moon', 'The Red Wolf', 'Ship of Death', 'Bavarian Gentians' and 'Autumn in Taos'.

All the poems appear in 'The Complete Poems of D.H. Lawrence' (London: Heinemann, 1967); 'Autumn at Taos' vol 1, pp 408-409; 'Invocation to the Moon' vol 2, pp 694-696; 'The Red Wolf' vol 1, pp 403-405; 'Ship of Death' vol 2, appendix III, pp 964-967; 'Bavarian Gentians' vol 2, appendix III, p 963. In Bavarian Gentians the last line of verse 2 has been omitted from the recording.

The original recording was made by J.S. Candelario, Taos, N.M.

Date: the record is not dated; Frieda Lawrence sent copies of the record with a letter to Laurence Pollinger, March 1950 (see La Mc 2/1/5), one copy was to be given to her son [Charles Montague Weekley] and she asked if the B.B.C. would like a copy for a broadcast; in a further letter of Jan. 1951 (see La Mc 2/1/78/1-2) she refers to a B.B.C. broadcast of the poems and Pollinger confirms, in his reply of Mar. 1951 (La Mc 2/1/91), that they were broadcast 'several months ago'; the recording was, therefore, made prior to March 1950 and broadcast by the B.B.C. later the same year.

Digital surrogate recordings on mp3 are available in the Reading Room.

The individual items are given their own description under sub-references of La Av 1/1.
