Content DescriptionIllustrated article on p.6 of the 'Arts Guardian' section of the 'Guardian' newspaper, about D.H. Lawrence, particularly with reference to the recent [1972] exhibition at Nottingham Castle on the 'Young Bert'.

Begins with an extract from the 'Daily Telegraph' Mar. 4 1930, after D.H. Lawrence's death, concerning his books and 'unspeakable pictures', written soon after his death; refers to the exhibition, which features fragments of the memoirs of Lawrence's schoolfriend George Henry Neville, as well as a tape recording of reminiscences by Prof. David Chambers; asserts that the exhibition highlights the ordinariness and Victorianism of the young Lawrence, and includes a quotation on this matter from Ford Madox Ford, the editor of the 'English Review', the paper which published his first poems and stories; includes an extract from a letter written by D.H. Lawrence to David Chambers in 1928.

Includes 5 photographic illustrations: One of the staff at Underwood School, including Jessie Chambers; one of D.H. Lawrence in 1905; one of Eastwood miners at the turn of the century; one of Victoria Street, where Lawrence was born; and one of Brinsley Colliery; also included is a drawing of Eastwood by Lawrence.
