Content Description | First letter from Jebb to the Bishop of Lincoln dated 5 Jun. 1878: States that one of his grooms was approached by a curate of Rev. Gray, vicar of Blyth, who asked him to confession. The other curate preached a sermon in which he advocated confession to a priest. Complains that this is not in keeping with the teachings of the Church of England. States that Viscount Galway also disagrees with the practise. Wanted to get the matter resolved before the consecration of the new church at Ranskill.
Reply by the Bishop of Lincoln to above letter, dated 10 Jun. 1878: Acknowledges Jebb's complaint. Has written to Mr Gray to ask him to make sure his teachings will be restrained within the limits allowed by the Church of England in future. Asks Jebb to remember Gray's many years of service for little renumeration.
Reply from Jebb dated 13 Jun. 1878: Thanks him for the prompt attention his complaint received, and also thanks him for the copy of his pastoral letter [see Ga 2 E 380]. |
