'A Prelude' was submitted for the paper's annual Christmas competition 1907 in the category 'For the best legend of some historic building' which it won; submitted under the name of Jessie Chambers, it was, in fact, written by D.H. Lawrence between 20 October and 8 November 1907 (See John Worthen, 'D.H. Lawrence: the early years, 1885-1912', Cambridge University Press, 1991, p 189 and Appendix I, p 472). |
