| Admin History | Peter Evershed was born on 5 February 1925. He spent almost all of the 1950s in America, primarily in New York where he associated with numerous artistic, jazz and literary personalities. In the early 1950s he was attached to a New York Gallery and met Dorothy Brett there when she was holding an exhibition. He later visited her in Taos, New Mexico where he met and painted Frieda Lawrence, the widow of writer, D.H. Lawrence. Evershed also met Frieda at Aldous Huxley's home in California. Other literary figures painted by Evershed have included Dylan Thomas and W.H. Auden.
Evershed lived most of his life in England and resided for a time in Derby. His portraits and landscape scenes have been acquired by galleries and libraries world-wide, including the University of Texas and the National Gallery of Wales. He died on 3 March 2020. |
