Content DescriptionStates that it was a long time since they last wrote and that life was much quieter since Campbell went home; in forms him they had spent the previous month at Yokohama training their ponies; relates an incident at races with French Legation; promises to send a photograph of the ponies and of himself; informs him Captain and Mrs Ashton had returned from their shooting holiday in the Rocky Mountains; states he could not join the Ashtons on their trip to Kioto [Kyoto] as the Chancery was short of staff and he had to take responsibility for the accounts; notes that many Japanese men speak English but very few women could do so.

Informs him that he and Admiral Coote had been presented to the Mikado; reports that the Mikado no longer wore traditional dress and his uniform was based on European military style; describes the palace furniture, gardens and the ceremony of his visit; all the male dignitaries wore European clothes; the Empress and her ladies were in full Japanese court dress; describes in detail the appearance of the Empress; the Mikado and Empress spoke through interpreters to the Heads of Mission and their wives; it was the first time the Empress had walked in public; she was more dignified than her spouse who was very shy and nervous; requests he tell Lady Buchanan Grosvenor had not forgotten her furs and that he wished to know what sort of Japanese embroideries she required; wishes them a Merry Christmas and sends love.
