Content DescriptionStates he had asked Fanny to pass his letter on and that he had settled into his house and was impressed with the country; informs him Sir Harry Parkes was not expected until the end of the summer and that Parkes was unpopular with the legation and the Japanese; states he had stayed with Kennedy until his house was organised; comments on Japanese ponies and states his driving pony won a race at Yokohama; states ponies were cheap and that he may buy another pony to race; reports that the French Legation boasted they would win all the autumn prizes; informs him there were rumours that the Ambassador may retire; comments on Sanderson's promotion to Private Secretary to Lord Granville; states he was making slow progress learning Japanese; expected him to be in Scotland waiting for the grouse season; sends his love to Lady Buchanan.
