Content DescriptionApologises for delay in writing but he had been unwell; hoped to visit Kobe and Kioto [Kyoto]; Henry Marsham was staying with him; they had been shopping for 'curios' but had given up 'as Americans and tourists had quite spoilt the market'; describes the winter weather, noting that the city was full of ducks and geese that nobody was allowed to shoot; had discovered a new 'sport' involving the capture of ducks in nets [which he describes at length]; a number of British visitors were in Japan, including Lord and Lady Harris, Lord and Lady Fouche and Mr Tuffnell who had travelled through America and China together; Mr Lambert and his family had also arrived; there had been an expedition to the Inland Sea; Sir Harry Parkes was due to replace Kennedy; had heard Sir Harry was not a pleasant man to work for.

Letter addressed to 'Jessie' and signed 'your affectionate brother'; unsure which member of the family was referred to as Jessie.
