Content DescriptionDiscusses the content of a note received from Calderón Collantes regarding the debt owed by Spain to Great Britain; reveals the Spanish Government have deducted several thousand pounds from the sum demanded and explains the reasons why; reveals Mr Collantes has been informed that the British Government will accept the terms requested on condition that the whole of the debt is paid in one instalment, otherwise 5 per cent will be added to subsequent instalments; reports the Spanish Government have met the claim 'in an honourable spirit'; explains the debt has remained unsettled because previous Spanish Governments had not given the matter their urgent attention; comments that it is 'curious' that a fire in the Spanish War Office and 'a similar accident in the Tower of London' should have destroyed so many important papers.
