Content DescriptionReports that the Minister of the United States and Calderón Collantes have signed a convention; reveals the Spanish Government will pay an indemnity 'equivalent to the duties improperly levied by the Cuban Government in 1845'; explains that part of this payment will be held by the Spanish Government to settle the American claims concerning the 'Amistad', and any other claims pending between the two Governments; comments that Mr Preston has acted 'in a just and conciliatory spirit' and has made every effort to prevent any quarrel occurring between the United States and Spain.
