Content Description
Discusses claims made by British, Dutch and American merchants against the Spanish Government for duties levied on goods imported into Cuba in 1845; explains the Spanish Government have reluctantly offered to pay compensation but have argued that the decree which opened the ports was not approved by the Imperial Government; reveals Mr Preston has declined to accept this compensation; reports the Spanish Government agreed to offer compensation in 1854; reveals a note has been sent to Calderón Collantes informing him that British claimants are unwilling to accept less than the full amount of compensation, despite rumours to the contrary.
