Content DescriptionRefers to the claims made by British subjects against the Spanish Government for duties levied on provisions and lumber in Cuba in 1843; explains these claims were made due to the revocation of a decree admitting the free importation of such Comodities; reports that 'credit will be opened at the Havanah in favour of the claimants for sums equal to one third of the duties levied'; reveals the Spanish Government have agreed to offer £250 to four of the claimants; reveals this sum is less than was offered in 1854 and will therefore be rejected; reports a similar offer for compensation has been made to American claimants; explains the Spanish Government is unwilling to settle the British claims until an agreement has been made with the United States.
