Content DescriptionReports on a conversation he has had with Mr Negreti on the subject of religious toleration, and on the secret Protestant/democratic society recently discovered; Mr Negreti admitted that he had to abandon his intention of promoting the necessity of extending moderate toleration to British Protestants but he stated that the authorities would not interfere with those British Protestants who met privately; Mr Negreti felt that the nation would not allow him to adopt a course of greater toleration until many years had passed; he [Buchanan] mentions a request for assistance he had received from Matamoros, a Protestant Spaniard imprisoned in Granada, and his companion Alhama, and Mr Negreti promised to obtain royal pardons for them; the Chaplain to the British legation has officiated at several funerals.
