Content DescriptionReports that rumours are circulating of a seditious movement of the "lower orders" in Anteguera; the government newspapers' attribute the movement to the matter of wages; however, he has heard of the discovery of a secret religious democratic society, which alarmists believe follow a combination of protestant and communistic principles, denying property rights as contrary to scripture; suspects the clergy will exaggerate the danger posed by the movement, to encourage the sympathies of the middle and upper classes against the intolerant religious Spanish laws; comments that the clergy teach the people that the Protestants and Jews have identical beliefs.
