Content DescriptionHe acknowledges receipt of his letter; he is sorry that the Bishop of Gibraltar will no longer support his mission; he reiterates that he has no power to appoint Chaplains at the Legation; he has voiced his opinion to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; they prefer to appoint unmarried men; it would be difficult to support another clergyman in Madrid; the majority of the wealthy British residents are Catholics; he does not want the Bishop of London to issue a licence for D'Orsey to be his Chaplain; Lord John Russell has appointed a Chaplain to the Legation.
