The region of Uzbekistan existed from c 1800 and was an area disputed between Turkey and Russia, which was conquered by Russia between 1868-1875; the Khiva region remained Turkish until 1873; Bukhara was ruled by Turks until 1868, as was the town of Samarkand; the Turkestan region was conquered from, Krasnovodsk, a town on the coast of the Caspian Sea [within the region]; the area was important for commerce especially with the building of the Trans-Caspian Railway; British interest in the region was due to commerce and the effect on India.
