Content Description
Thanks him for the autograph of Prince Gorchkoff [Gorchakov] and requests he send others; comments on the carnival atmosphere in London; gives details of the dance held at Lady Fife's for the Prince and Princess of Wales; informs him of changes his brother has made to decorations in The Hague residence; comments on the offence caused by invitations sent out for the last Court held by the Queen; informs him that Sydney has communicated with Sir E. Cust on this matter; informs him that since the death of the Consort 'blunders' have consistently been made in Court invitations; comments on how keen the Consort was on correct Court ceremony and etiquette;
Gives details of his conversation with Bloomfield and Sydney; Sir F. Bruce is unhappy about being 'obliged' to go to Washington having spent so much time in China; comments on the possibility of enhancements being made to the salary and standing of the Washington post; comments that Spring-Rice is dissatisfied and on Hammond's social life in Vienna; relates two riddles he has been told; sends best wishes to Lady Buchanan and members of the legation.
