Congratulates him on his promotion in the Order of the Bath to G.C.B., especially in light of comments made by Magenis, who had told him that the War Office were not issuing any extra awards; informs him he will discuss his move to St Petersburg with Georgiana who was due to arrive at home; asks him not to announce his intention to take leave in October to the Foreign Office until the last moment; reports in confidence that Brunnow had told Clarendon how pleased Gorchakov and the Emperor were with his [Buchanan's] services; comments on his salary and allowances compared with those of [Savile] Lumley; reports seeing his daughter at a ball and that he had dined with Hammond who expressed pleasure at the news of his G.C.B.
