Content DescriptionThanks him for his letter; he is disappointed at being refused leave; informs that him he was aware of the resignation of Sir J. Hudson; Elliot is to replace him; discusses possible moves to accommodate these changes; expresses a wish to get his family 'out of Washington'; explains at great length the response from London to his request for leave; asks that he [Buchanan] put a word in for him as he has not been home for two years; informs him Lord Lyons is to leave for Canada; he [Elliot] wishes to be home in time for 'Balmacaan Covert Shooting'; he believes the situation to be of 'Hammond's making'; remarks on how Georgiana must have enjoyed her visit to the Queen of the Netherlands; discussion of the quality of hunting in Scotland.

Informs him of the irritation felt at the French conquest of Mexico; remarks that if the French Emperor was not involved in Poland he should give a 'helping hand' to the Southern Confederacy; discussion of the defeat of General Lee's army; he [Stuart] is sure the next Presidential elections will be of great importance; gives message to be passed to Lady Seafield; the weather is very hot; asks when he will return to Berlin; remarks that 'Scarlett is doomed' and speculates that Erskine may go to Greece, Paget to Madrid and William Grey to Copenhagen; sends love to Georgiana and his [Stuart's] mother;

Postscript suggesting he speak to George Elliot before commenting on his [Stuart's] leave.
