Content Description	Gives details of the career of the man in prison at Padua [Mr Newton] whose real name may be Mr Phin; gives details of his career including an appearance in Constantinople as Major Fane; hopes his [Buchanan's] health has improved; asks what he intends to do to mark the Queen's [Victoria] birthday or if the King had invited him to dinner at the palace; states that he intends to hold a dinner; the Danish war looks certain to continue unless the Danes release the captive ships and lift the blockade; speculates on the possibility of Garibaldi causing war between Italy and Austria; states that the German army was much improved but that the English had no troops to spare due to the number needed to police the colonies. Reports on a meeting with Karolyi who had expressed alarm at the mention of the British fleet being sent to the Baltic and could not see an end to the conflict unless Denmark yielded; was pleased to hear that Bismarck's mood had improved; it was believed in Austria that the inclusion of Howard's despatches in the Blue Book would force Platen's resignation; expresses his disapproval of the Blue Book system.
