Content DescriptionReturns with thanks his despatch; comments that the convention has done Prussia a great deal of harm, for which Bismarck will pay; Austria does not intend to invoke the Treaty [of Vienna] of 1815 regarding Poland; a Polish kingdom will make a more powerful neighbour than Russia in the region leading to the Black Sea; Gromont has received an instrument from William Grey suggesting that all the signatories to the Treaty of Vienna call on Russia to honour the 1815 agreement on Poland; relations between Rechberg and Bismarck are very poor; Rechberg kept Karolyi informed but refuses to allow him to pass any papers to Bismarck; Metternich has been sent for in order that Rechberg may know his private impressions about the intentions of Napoléon; Howard will be very happy [to receive his KCB], which had been denied him by Loftus.

Reports that things have gone well in London; it was a pity the Queen had not allowed state carriages and flags in Paddington station [for the arrival of Edward and Alexandra]; understands that the King and Queen have dined with him the previous day; his own state banquet has been a great success; Bülow also has had a banquet; Cowley was not present.
