Content DescriptionDescribes his journey from Madrid to Barcelona in some detail, including local customs and landmarks; had failed to find Goya's house; disliked the countryside of Aragon, preferring Catalonia; had seen some of Mr Clifford's photographs; had seen Baker and Pratt who were both expecting to have to lobby on behalf of Dr Roberts who had been practising medicine without a licence; Captain Fraser of the Life Guards delivered a letter from his brother Augustus who had been visiting galleries in Madrid with the Prince of Wales [Edward]; remarks that the Prince was not allowed to attend balls but had managed to 'amuse himself very well'; had liked Vice Consul [Charles] Barrie.

Had received letter from Sir Hamilton stating that the government is doomed; Lord John would be most likely to succeed Lord Derby; wonders if the 'pestilent Quaker' Bright would demand a place in the Cabinet; reports that it is said the Lord Cowley has rung many concessions from the Emperor of Austria; the German people back him against the French; a friend had sent him the enclosed account of Ball given by Lord and Lady Napier in Washington; states that Lady Napier was the object of scandal.
