Congratulates him on his appointment to Madrid, but had hoped he would go to Vienna or St Petersburg; suggests some appointments are unfair including Lord Chelsea's; is sorry for Orme as he may be stranded in Bolivia should Lord Lyndhurst die; the situation in China has not changed; they are awaiting the arrival of troops before signing any treaty; a ceremony for Lord Elgin had gone very well; describes the climatic changes; has received news that the Taylors have had a son and he is to be godfather; asks him to write with details of the Sound Dues treaty.
PS The Russian treaty is signed; dated Jun 15.
