Content DescriptionUntil the 18th century, the churchwardens of each parish were required to provide answers to Articles supplied by the Archdeacon, using the method of churchwardens' Presentment Bills (see series AN/PB). By the 19th century, the churchwardens were expected, at the visitation of the Rural Dean, to answer questions relating to the fabric of the church buildings, the conduct of the clergy, the administration of parish affairs, and the ministration of religion. These articles were answered, from 1866, on pre-printed forms, which are what survive in this series.

Books of Articles from 1914 onwards are for the modern Archdeaconry of Nottingham, comprising only the southern part of the county of Nottingham.
Related MaterialVisitation Articles from 1583 and 1585 are numbered AN/V 376/1.
