Admin History
The collection consists chiefly of books which belonged to Florence Nightingale and her family.
Custodial History
The Nightingale family connection with the University extends back to the 1930s when Mr Shore Nightingale was a member of the College Council, and made a gift to the University of various books and artefacts belonging to Florence Nightingale and her family. These books were absorbed within the Library’s general collections at an early stage. In 1954 Mr E. Osborne gave the University a further collection of books associated with Florence Nightingale. These have recently been transferred from Nightingale Hall to Manuscripts and Special Collections and form the Florence Nightingale Collection. The collection is not actively being added to.
Books authored by Florence Nightingale are actively collected in the East Midlands Special Collection, to preserve the actual content of the original Florence Nightingale Collection which Mr E. Osborne donated in 1954.
Description
The collection is a very small one, and rather miscellaneous in content, but it includes some material on the Crimean War, together with other volumes presented to Miss Nightingale.
