Admin History | In 1986 University Council supported the creation of a new University History project. This was led by Professor Brian Tolley and resulted in 2001 in the publication of 'The History of the University of Nottingham' by B.H. Tolley in 2 volumes. This publication extended the history of the University beyond other earlier publications about the University, most notably A.C. Wood's 'A History of University College, Nottingham, 1881-1948', published in 1953. Co-operation between the 1980s University History Project and the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections resulted in the publication of ‘Campus Collection: a Photographic Record of the University of Nottingham’ by Sue Ablett and Dorothy Johnston. Published in 1989, this volume was aimed at a different audience from the Tolley history and provided a more personal and vsual approach. It made use of several photographic images already held by Manuscripts and others which were acquired as a result of an appeal for photographs from alumni and former students at the University as part of the University History Project. Some images relating to the University were also purchased or acquired from commercial organisations. These photographs are included here. 'Nottingham: A History of Britain's Global University' written by Professor John Beckett and published in 2016, traces the University from its origins through to 2015. |
Custodial History | Most of the photographs in this section were acquired in the 1980s. |
Description | This group of photographs covers a wide range of subjects, and shows buildings and developments at the University as well as recording events and student and staff activities. A number of the photographs, but not all, were published in ‘Campus Collection’ in 1989 and have been used again in subsequent exhibitions and displays. Many of the photographs in this group were donated by alumni, and therefore relate closely to other groups of photographs which have been acquired from alumni: Photographs collected by the Alumni Office, and also the Development and Campaign Offices at The University of Nottingham (UMP/9) and Photographs relating to the University of Nottingham and the earlier University College, Nottingham, donated by alumni (NUP). |
