Admin History | University College Nottingham was established under the aegis of the Town Council. As such, the Town Clerk was the initial chief administrative officer of the College. College business featured in the Town Council minutes alongside the other administrative functions of the Corporation.
University College Nottingham statutes of May 1904 determined that; 'The Registrar shall be responsible for the enrolment of all students of the College, and shall act as Secretary to the Senate'. The registrar kept minutes of Senate meetings which were held once a month. The post of registrar was much broader than these secretarial duties and it became the senior academic position within the college and later, the University of Nottingham.
The Principals of University College Nottingham headed up the Senate and Boards of Professors. Few papers survive from the earliest principals, Frank Clowes, John Symes and William Heaton. From Hugh Stewart onwards the records are very complete. |
Description | The vast bulk of this series consists of correspondence and working files maintained by the bodies and individuals responsible for the administration of the college. The papers cover the whole range of business involved in the running of the college. Included in this are papers relating to staff, such as recruitment, pension schemes and internal correspondence, and papers relating to the work of individual departments. Material relating to students can be found in a number of different places within this series. Lists of students can be found among the miscellaneous papers in the Clerk's correspondence files and amongst the University Grant's committee papers in the Registrar's correspondence files. Student records can also be found amongst the Principal's papers.
As well as the main series of administrative papers there is also a small amount of material relating to University College property. There are a series of property files covering the purchase, sale and lease of buildings, 1915-1939, a small group of inventories and three plans of buildings for the University Park campus.
