Admin HistoryThe Tobacco Workers Union (TWU) had its origins in a number of craft unions dating back to 1834. In 1918, several small unions combined, remodelling in 1925 and adopting the title Tobacco Workers Union. In 1946 the TWU absorbed the Cigar and Tobacco Workers Union. Since about 1980 the TWU has been part of the Technical and Supervisory Section of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers, based in London. There is no longer a Nottingham District office.
Custodial HistoryThe records were transferred to Nottingham University Library from the TWU Nottingham District Office in 1983. Three further volumes were added from the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Records held in the Modern Records Centre, University of Warwick.
DescriptionThe main body of records dates from the early 1940s to the late 1960s, reflecting the administrative procedures as well as the practical functions of the union. There is a comprehensive series of minutes and contribution books (separate books for male and female workers), along with some accounts. There is also some correspondence, along circulars relating to specific issues e.g. relations with employers and other organisations, official disputes and social matters. There is a small amount of ephemera, including recruitment posters and Union journals, and a few photographs of strikes and Union officials.
