|Admin History||The Nottingham Trades Union Council has its origins in the Joint Committee of the United Trade Councils of Nottingham, formed in 1883. The committee provided a forum for the various trade unions representing workers' rights in Nottingham at the time. This involved petitioning Parliament and arbitrating with employers when necessary. In 1890, the Association of Organised Trades and the Federated Trades Council replaced the committee. It maintained a commitment to improving workers' education, wages and working conditions. It was later renamed Nottingham Trades Council and then Nottingham Trades Union Council. It is still in existence and its scope has widened to embrace a variety of socialist activities including the combat of racism and Fascism, and support for civil rights and environmental groups.|
|Custodial History||The minutes in the collection came to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in October 1957 and June 1966. Further accruals comprising correspondence and printed matter relating to the council and its activities have been acquired regularly since 1980.|
