Content DescriptionThe Trent River Authority (and before it the Trent River Board) divided its activities into three areas: Water Resources, Land Drainage, Fisheries, and Prevention of River Pollution.

Work that came under the heading of Water Resources included the Trent Research Programme, initiated in 1967 in conjunction with the Water Resources Board, to look for possible alternative techniques for meeting demand and investigating the cost of the various options. The Programme involved research into future demand, augmentation of river flow, costs of waste water treatment (Colwick Water Purification Plant), river purification lakes, artificial recharge of Bunter Sandstone, gravels recharge, dual supply systems, recreation benefits and the Trent Economic Model. The Trent Research Programme was published in 1973 by the Water Resources Board. For more information on the Authority's experimental research see RH/WR/X.

The Water Resources Section (actually a sub-department of the Engineer's Department) was concerned with most aspects of the Authority's work in the development of water resources in the Authority's area (see the records listed as RH), but some Engineer's Department papers relate to higher level management of some of the same activities, notably the Authority's development of a reservoir at Carsington, Derbyshire.
